Alexz Wigg takes the Win Gas Gas's Alexz Wigg stormed to a brilliant 'top time' win at the Super Expert trial Canada Heights Kent. Wigg riding the Gas Gas in launch mode catapulted at logs, banks, rocks and stuck to them like bubble gum's determination to fasten itself to your shoe when you've just trod on it - vaulting himself up the respect board as the defending champion lodged this his second win of the title - the display of skill enthralled the spectators and gave a new meaning to 'who's the daddy'. Speaking to Wigg he had this to say, "The trials been really good, I've really enjoyed it and there was no real difficult situations in the trial". Not to be eclipsed and live in Wigg's shadow, Sam Haslam was fired up for action. Haslam evoked a war-on-war section campaign with Wigg with the first lap exchange going in Haslam's favour. The described Mini World Round trial, Haslam was always their matching Wigg in the blow-by-blow contest but for some minor footing handed Wigg his second title win. Another rising star Haslam commented, "Great trial, nothing difficult, excellent day I've really enjoyed myself". Gas Gas ace Richard Ely rounded off the final podium position. Ely, suffering a pre-damaged hand cranked the pace up on lap three to frighten Wigg and Haslam with his 2-mark loss. It was the old cliché (a little to much to late) Ely commented about the trial, "if only the South Eastern trials had more obstacles like this rather than the driving across roots and banks and mud - excellent trial". Alexz Wigg, Sam Haslam and Richard Ely secured them their goal - three Gas Gas riders on the podium. Sherco's tipped podium rider Wayne Holdsworth was off the pace having heavily damaged himself early in the trial. Holdsworth fought a courageous ride to finish battered and bruised. At section eight riding up and over the base of a fallen tree, which stood 6+ feet with jagged roots everywhere he caught the front wheel on a lump as he passed the crest and went clean over the bars - the bike then landing on top of him - fortunately help was a hand and shear grit determination Holdsworth continued. Sherco's hopefuls Tim Connor, Adam Farley and former winner Stephen Foord made little headway against the formidable Gas Gas trio, but will know doubt be out to avenge this defeat in 2006. The blue route (expert) winner saw a rare appearance from the multi talented Chris Koch take the win with just a five marks loss. Ben Ely took second place with Michael James clinching the third with a joint score too Ely at the end of play, but saw Ely on the furthest cleans to take second place. The Youth class winner Ben Morphett stamped his authority riding the Expert route with an eight-mark loss. Morphett dominated the Youth field from the start, winning easily and looked unflustered and invincible aboard the Gas Gas 125. Josh Woods was ready to take the win should have Morphett messed up, but his second lap dilemma's at sections four and ten handed Morphett the win. Stephen Douglas took third place with his low score of just fifteen marks. A special thanks to the Observers, Sidcup DMCC and Reg Playfoot for the course construction. |
